What started as a hobby to create headwear on the mountains, Krochet Kids quickly grew beyond the trio to incorporate close friends who shared a desire to see Northern Uganda transformed by hook and yarn. Halfway through college, the three founders applied to become a non-profit organization and began crocheting again to sell hats and share their vision for what the team planned to do. The following summer, after countless skype meetings and late nights, they found themselves sitting in a simple brick hut with a group of Ugandan women and bags full of yarn watching the ladies nearly master crocheting before their very eyes.
“During our summer breaks [of college] we volunteered in various developing nations, hoping to gain a better understanding of the global community in which we lived. It wasn't long before we came to realize how blessed we had been growing up. The desire was planted within us to help. To reach out in love. To make a difference. This is our story."
Through a unique model Krochet Kids Intl. is empowering the women of Northern Uganda and Peru with the assets, skills, and knowledge to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. They provide a job so that women can meet the present needs of their families. They then educate them so that they develop beyond the need for outside aid. And finally, they provide mentorship to help each lady plan a unique and sustainable career path for the future. The result is long lasting and sustainable change.
